Gerunds are
used:
- As the subject. Playing handball is very interesting.
- After any preposition. After writing any preposition, you must use a gerund.
- After phrasal verbs. She is giving up smoking.
- “Looking forward to”
- After this verbs: admit, avoid, can't help, (consider), (delay), finish, forgive, give up, mind, miss, imagine, (postpone), put off, report, prevent, resist, (risk), (suggest.
Infinitive
(+to) are used:
- After this verb: agree, appear, afford, attempt, arrange, ask, choose, decide, expect, help, hope, intent, learn, manage, offer, pretend, promise, refuse, seem.
- After adjectives. My flat is easy to find.
- To express a reason or purpose. He is saving money to buy a new computer.
Infinitive
(without to):
- After most modal and auxiliary verbs. We can't fly. We must hurry.
- After make. She always make me laugh.
- After let. Please, let me go out tonight.
