SCENE I
The act
starts otf with Sampson and Gregory, servants in the Capulet`s house (Juliet`s
home) walking through Verona, spotting the servants of the Montague family and
trying to come up with a way to provoke them into a fight. Sampson bites his
thumb (an insulting gesture) at the Montague servants. A small light quickly
breaks out. Benvolio, a Montague, comes and draws his sword to end the light.
Tybalt, a Capulet, approaches the scene and also pulls out his sword. Benvolio
tries explaining to him that he’s only trying to create peace between the two
pair of servants. However, Tybalt states that his hatred for peace is
equivalent to his hatred of the Montagues. From there, the
tight
escalated leading to the citizens to join the tight. Adding to that the heads
of the families see the light and include themselves in it. The Prince of
Verona approaches the tight and orders them to stop the tight by threatening
them with death if they break the law once again. Benvolio is let alone with
Montague and Lady Montague and explains to them how the light started. Lady
Montague asks him where her son, Romeo, is, as all he has been doing lately is
lock himself in his room. Benvolio assures Romeo’s parents that he will find
out the reason. At that moment, Romeo enters and starts ranting on how he’s in
love with a girl, Rosaline, who doesn’t love him back. However, Benvolio tells
him to just get over it and look lor another girl.
SCENE II
Paris, one
of the noble kinsmen of the prince, goes to Capulet to ask him for his
daughter’s, Juliet, hand in marriage. Capulet disagrees, as he believes that
she is too young to get married. However, he invites him to the least occurring
that night so he can try to gain Juliet’s consent and then he might agree. At
the same time, Capulet gives Peter, the servant, a list of the people invited
but Peter cannot read. However, just as Capulet and Paris were about to leave,
Peter comes across Benvolio and Romeo who can read. As Romeo read the list, he
noticed Rosalie’s name. After reading the list,
Peter
invites them as long as they don’t belong to the Montague household. However,
despite the danger involved, Romeo decides to go so he can see his love,
Rosaline. Benvolio agrees on the decision, as he believes Romeo might meet
other women that might interest him.
SCENE III
Lady
Capulet and the nurse are trying to convince Juliet to marry Paris. They insist
that she is not too young and that girls younger than her are getting married.
However, Juliet disagrees on the whole idea of marriage at this age. So they
both come to a compromise; Juliet should go to the feast to meet Paris and try
to see the beauty he’s got.
SCENE IV
Romeo,
Benvolio, and Mercuito gather before the feast. They all agree to wear masks to
the feast so they can conceal their identity, as they are Montagues. However.
Romeo informs them that he will not dance at the least due to a bad dream he
had. The dream apparently explained to him that it was a bad idea to go to the
least. Mercuito responds to this with a lengthy speech about Queen Mab of the
fairies who visits people’s dreams. Romeo then stops him leading to Mercuito
admitting that his speech was nothing. Romeo closes the scene by saying that he
has a feeling that ‘fate` may have
something
bad in store for him.
SCENE V
The scene
starts out with two servants talking to one another as they are preparing the
masque.
Capulet then welcomes the guests to his masque, encouraging them to dance and
enjoy themselves at the party. While Capulet and his cousin discuss the last
time they were at a masque, Tybalt hears Romeo’ voice (when he is entranced in
Juliet's beauty), recognizes his voice as a Montague and tells Capulet of his
presence and tries to get him to do something about him. Capulet dismisses this
and tells Tybalt to calm down and not make a fuss over this at the feast
because he believes that Romeo is not going to cause any harm. Frustrated,
Tybalt leaves. Romeo talks to Juliet, they proclaim their love for one another
then kiss, When Juliet is asked by a nurse to go to speak to her mother. Romeo
asks the nurse whom her mother is. The nurse tells Romeo that she is a Capulet,
so him and Benvolio decide to leave once Romeo realizes that he had gotten
himself in trouble being a Montague in love with a Capulet.
Curious
herself Juliet asks the nurse who Romeo was, the nurse tells her that he is a
Montague,
and it is then that Juliet realizes that she also had gotten herself in
trouble.
