Scene I
Romeo
climbs a wall bordering the Capulet property and leaps down into the Capulet
orchard.
Benvolio and Mercutio enter, calling out for Romeo. They can’t find Romeo and Mercutio
mocks Romeo’s feelings for Rosaline in an obscene speech. Mercutio and Benvolio
leave, realizing that Romeo doesn’t want to be found.
Importance:
Leads into the next scene where Juliet and Romeo speak.
Scene II
In the
beginning of the scene, Romeo is still in the Capulet orchard. As he is
waiting,
Juliet
comes from the balcony above and preaches her love for Romeo, believing she is
alone. As she speaks Romeo listens until he is sure she loves him. They
continue to tell each other their love to one another, until Nurse interrupts
and calls for Juliet. After speaking with Nurse for a short while, Romeo and
Juliet hatch an idea that Juliet will send for a messenger to go meet Romeo
where he can tell Juliet where they will secretly wed.
Importance:
The iconic scene where Juliet says “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou
Romeo?” They
soon proclaim their love for each other.
Scene III
In the morning
the next day, Romeo goes to see Friar Lawrence. Friar realizes Romeo
did not
sleep and asks if he was with Rosaline. Romeo told him that Rosaline was the past
and now he is in love with Juliet. Friar Lawrence hesitant at first agrees to
help Romeo because he believes that this marriage may be the end to the battle
between the families.
Importance:
Romeo has found someone who will marry the couple, and all is going according
to plan.
Scene IV
Romeo is
missing, and Benvolio comments how Tybalt a fierce fighter has challenged Romeo
to a dual. As Romeo returns, the subject changes to why he left his friends the
night before. This leads to a series of sexual jokes about Romeo loving Juliet.
Soon peter and Nurse enter. Nurse wishes to speak to Romeo about how he will
meet Juliet. He explains that they will be wed a Friar Lawrence’s cell, as long
as she can make an excuse to leave. Nurse blesses them but warms him that his
heart better be true and this is not a cruel prank.
Importance:
Romeo is able to convey his plan to Juliet through Nurse.
Scene V
Juliet has
been waiting for Nurse for 3 hours, hoping to hear news about Romeo. Nurse
tries to
stall making Juliet more and more anxious. Finally. she tells Juliet to meet Romeo
at Friar Lawrence’s cell that afternoon for their wedding.
Importance:
Proves that Juliet’s love for Romeo is true and she is willing to go through
great lengths to be with him.
Scene VI
Romeo goes
to Friar Laurence’s cell to be married to Juliet Friar Laurence, seeing how
in love
Romeo is, warns him that he should show moderation. Juliet meets them in the
cell and Friar Laurence prepares to perform their wedding.
Importance:
Romeo and Juliet are happily wed, in secrecy though.
